Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest particular rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
