British authorities has placed 11 further destinations to its travel advisory roster about the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The revised warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only last month, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following multiple serious incidents including the fatal demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance typically employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to save money, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Government Advice for Tourists

Authorities minister Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should know the signs of methanol contamination.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.

"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The entire register of countries noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
