Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
