Ex- FBI director James Comey has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's legal representative submitted the answer on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was indicted shortly after the former president pushed his top legal official to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to file various petitions to throw out the case before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to take over the case.

The former director's case was initially managed by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his probe into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government recently fired.

After listening to the magistrate state his rights and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Background Context

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as president. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey caused a backlash from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, leading to disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim the former director lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the upper house by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to disclose to media organizations details about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, hinder and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording James Comey published to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and accused Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".

"We have known for a long time that there are costs to challenging the former president," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The charges against Mr Comey came after the former president posted on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge the former director and others.
