A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
